Heading for Poland: Auschwitz

In Journey Poland on November 14, 2009 at 11:00 pm

We finally arrived in Poland after 5 days of showers and bad weather. Road conditions in Poland are awful. They are narrow and do not meet road safety requirements. People (believe me!) walk along the edge of the road. In addition, they are busy and  packed of large lorries. Oh! forget road signals. People drive  on the right and  have the headlights on day and night. Obsviously we did not dare to travel after the sunset.

We stayed in hotel at the centre of Bielsko-Biala. On the following day we went to Birkenau-Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II. In the end of the day we arrived in Krakow.

Tips about Krakow:

Visit the Wawel Royal Castle

And The Barroque Churchs of St Peter and St Paul at Grodzka Street

Go around the market at the Cloth Hall

Sit for a drink at caffé in front of the Town Hall

Visit the Dome of Virgin Mary

Have a drink at The Grand Square

Heading for Poland: Summer in Viena

In Vienna on November 12, 2009 at 10:34 pm

We arrived in Vienna in the afternoon. Actually, at about lunchtime.   Vienna is a green and busy  city  with loads of  parks. We stayed in a hotel,  Hotel Resonanz Vienna, 200m from the city centre at the Jewish quarter: 70 euros for an ensuite including breakfast.  The breakfast buffet is excellent: juices, fresh fruit, yoghurt, cookies, toast. Yummie…

As the hotel is not far from the main tourist sites, we went for  a lovely  walking – tour.

We started our tour from the Museumquartier: it is the largest complex of museum in the world.

We visited the Museum of Fine Art.

We went to the The Natural History Museum which faces to other aristocratic building, The Art History Museum.

Tips:

Drink a coffee in the café of The Museum of Fine Art, looking breathless the barroque ceiling and elegant room.

Have an ice cream in the best Ice Shop of  Vienna, the Italian Zanoni.

Treat yourself and go shopping in the central shopping area: the city is packed with nice branded shops.

Pay a guided tour to visit the backstage of the Vienna State Opera.

Go to the Mumok.

Watch a film connected to an opera in the Film Festival in front of the Vienna City Hall.

Eat the world famous cake, The Sacher Torte.

Just relax and have a pic-nic at the Stadpark.

Heading for Poland

In Journey Poland on November 10, 2009 at 11:20 pm

Visiting Poland in 2007 was one of the amaziest experience I’ve ever had. Why did we choose Poland? First of all, we had very pleasant moments in Eastern Europe. We’ve been to Hungary, Baltic Republics and Czech Republic. Despite of the distance and the awful weather conditions of the journey, I would say that Poland is a lovely country with kind people. The cities are well-organized with good service, although accommodation is quite expensive and does not meet requirements.

We left Sardinia in very hot day and arrived in a cloudy Genova. It is always a pleasure to visit Genova. It is such a cosmopolitan city. We drove from Genova till Trentino under the rain: it was raining a lot and very cold. We stopped at a BeB and had a delicious lunch. We left as soon as we finished eating since  it was still raining  and we wanted to reach the Austrian border before night. So we decided to  take the motorway. From now on, you are going to know how the journey to Poland was like.

Important warning: you need to buy toll tariff to drive in Austrian motorways.
